Waves of Time | Chapter Three: Faith in Fate

 CHAPTER THREE: FAITH IN FATE

This chapter concludes and confirms what Bella was trying to tell Mortimer in the beginning.

"She was a prism through which
sadness could be divided into its infinite spectrum."
~ Jonathan Safran Foer

MORTIMER

When my father died, my mom was never the same again.

I guess, that's why lovebirds die when the other is gone...

Perhaps due to loneliness...

Or perhaps to join the other in the after life...

If that even exists...

We moved out of mom's house and went back to our home to start again.

Funny how Cassandra and Alexander grew up so fast.
They're both smart and as loving and talented as their mother.

I wanted to keep the happiness in their eyes so much that I had to make sure they are all taken care of when I, too, am gone.

So, I spoke with someone who had experienced teleportation first hand to help me with my invention - something that I had been working on (since learning about Bella's fears) that would allow me to time travel.

I wanted to retire knowing my inventions would help us find a way to avoid the glitches in time, especially that which Bella feared so much...

CASSANDRA

It was love at first sight...
I knew the moment he walked into the room that he's gonna change my life forever.

And I couldn't have been more right...

ALEXANDER

They said I was just a kid, but as young as I was then, I already knew my purpose in life.  Call me insane, but I knew right there and then I was born to test the limits of space and time.

MORTIMER

I thought we had already weathered the worst storm in our life, but Bella was back to being miserable again.

I did everything to comfort her, but nothing seemed to ease her heart and mind at all.

She just kept repeating and repeating those words...

"I will love you till eternity..."

Her words echoed to the deepest core of my soul.

CASSANDRA

It didn't take long for Don and I to fall in love.
He had this irresistible, disarming charm that made me want him so badly.

With him, every moment was so perfect.

Or so I thought.

I never imagined he would back out of our wedding.

My parents were so furious.

My mom, especially.

MORTIMER

Bella was so mad she just cannot let Don get away with hurting our Cassandra.

She wanted Don to feel sorry for what he did to our precious daughter.

I don't know how their conversation went, but I imagine Don's arrogance may have infuriated Bella more.

And that was the last time Bella was seen.

It seemed like the heavens had cursed us to have brought so much rain in our life...

What did we do to deserve all these?

Why take Bella?

Might as well take my life for I cannot live without the love of my life...

ALEXANDER

I begged Cassandra to help me find our mom.

But she said she was as helpless as I was.

I did not believe her when she said there was nothing we could do to bring our mom back.

I knew dad was working on something for mom but just couldn't figure out the missing piece.

Turns out, the missing piece was me.

I was the key to the time machine that dad had invented.

I was the anomaly in the timeline from the very beginning.

My future self had traveled to the time when mom and dad first met, hoping to change it in order to change how the future would turn out.

I had to keep trying to change the events that lead to my mom's disappearance.

Even if I had to go back and forth and lose myself in the process.

I was too busy fixing the past that I failed to notice what was going on at present.

I failed to notice how quickly my dad was spiraling out of control.

In the end, everything I did was pointless.

Fate still prevailed.

They were both destined to meet again somewhere I could never travel.

And as complex as space and time,

I learned that love is an endless loop that keeps on spinning...

Until you're back right where you started...
